Thyroid hormones, namely thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), play a crucial role in the normal physiological processes and development of all vertebrates. In zebrafish, the introduction of external T4 has been observed to cause the early differentiation of pectoral fins and hasten the growth of pelvic fins.
