Target Information

Claudin-2 is primarily expressed in cation-leaky epithelia, such as the kidney proximal tubule. Overexpression of claudin-2 in cells lacking it leads to increased permeability for small cations. Claudin-2 has also been shown to form paracellular channels for water. Bovine Claudin-2 is encoded by the CLDN2 gene in cattle. Claudin-2 is a tight junction protein that mediates paracellular water transport in intestinal epithelia, making them "leaky".
