Target Information
Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), also known as cyclic AMP or 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate, serves as a critical second messenger within cells, playing a pivotal role in numerous biological processes. Derived from adenosine triphosphate (ATP), cAMP facilitates intracellular signal transduction across various organisms, primarily through the cAMP-dependent pathway. The synthesis of cAMP occurs via adenylate cyclase, an enzyme situated on the inner side of the plasma membrane and anchored at different intracellular locations. Activation of adenylate cyclase is triggered by various signaling molecules, often mediated by adenylate cyclase stimulatory G (Gs)-protein-coupled receptors. Conversely, agonists of adenylate cyclase inhibitory G (Gi)-protein-coupled receptors inhibit its activity. Notably, liver adenylate cyclase responds more robustly to glucagon, while muscle adenylate cyclase is more sensitive to adrenaline.
