Target Information

Procollagen type III amino terminal propeptide (PIIINP) serves as an indicator of fibroblast activity and increased collagen type III turnover in humans. During collagen type III synthesis, the amino terminal propeptide is cleaved from the procollagen molecule. In dogs, the COL3A1 gene encodes PIIINP. PIIINP is utilized as a marker for collagen type III synthesis, and changes in its concentration reflect collagen metabolism and fibrogenesis. There is a higher PIIINP concentration in dogs with chronic renal failure (CRF), cardiomyopathy (CMP) or heart failure (HF).
