Platelet-activating factor (PAF), also known as PAF-acether or AGEPC (acetyl-glyceryl-ether-phosphorylcholine), is a potent phospholipid activator and mediator of many leukocyte functions, platelet aggregation and degranulation, inflammation, and anaphylaxis. PAF is produced by various cells, especially those involved in host defense. It is continuously produced by these cells but in low quantities. It is a key proinflammatory mediator in the initiation and progression of cancer.
