Target Information

Alpha internexin (α-INX) is a type of neurofilament protein found in the nervous system of humans and other mammals. It is one of the three neurofilament proteins, along with beta and gamma internexin, that contribute to the structural integrity of neurons. Alpha Internexin is particularly important for maintaining the stability and function of axons, the long projections of nerve cells that transmit electrical impulses. The protein's role in the nervous system makes it a target of interest for research into neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), where neurofilament abnormalities are implicated. Mutations or abnormal accumulations of α-INX can lead to disruptions in axonal transport and ultimately to neuronal degeneration.
