Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen responsible for causing Q fever. It is a small Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium known for its high resistance to environmental stresses, including elevated temperatures, osmotic pressure, and ultraviolet light. Naturally, C. burnetii infects animals like goats, sheep, and cattle, and can be found in the birth products (such as placenta and amniotic fluid), urine, feces, and milk of these infected animals.
