Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), also known as GABA, is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature mammalian central nervous system. Its main role is to reduce neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. It lessens a nerve cell's ability to receive, create, or send chemical messages to other nerve cells. GABA works together with another neurotransmitter, serotonin. It has been used within a few hours prior to competition in equine sports to calm down nervous horses.
