Target Information
Cytochrome P450 (P450) 7A1, commonly known as cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, is the initial enzyme in the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids. It catalyzes the hydroxylation of the carbon-hydrogen bond at the 7-alpha position of cholesterol, which is a rate-limiting step in both cholesterol catabolism and bile acid production. Studies have been done to understand the regulation of the CYP7A1 gene in hamsters, and how it differs from the regulation of that gene in other species. Hamsters differ from other rodents in their CYP7A1 response to dietary cholesterol, making them valuable models for studying cholesterol-related diseases.
