Target Information
SOX-2, or sex determining region Y-box 2, is a high-mobility group (HMG) box-containing transcription factor that plays a pivotal role in the regulation of embryonic development, particularly in the maintenance of pluripotency and self-renewal of stem cells. It is a key factor in the core transcriptional regulatory circuitry of stem cells, alongside OCT4 and NANOG. SOX-2 is expressed in early embryogenesis and is critical for the development of the central nervous system and the eye. Its function extends to the regulation of cell fate decisions and the promotion of neural stem cell proliferation.
