Target Information
Canine IgA (immunoglobulin A) is a vital antibody isotype in dogs, primarily involved in mucosal immunity. It is predominantly found in secretions such as saliva, tears, and gastrointestinal fluids, where it serves as a first line of defense against pathogens. IgA functions by neutralizing viruses and bacteria, preventing their adherence to mucosal surfaces and subsequent invasion. In dogs, IgA is synthesized by plasma cells located in mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT) and is secreted in a dimeric form, linked by a J-chain. This structure enhances its ability to trap and neutralize pathogens, making it a crucial component of the mucosal immune barrier. IgA also plays a role in immune tolerance by binding to harmless antigens and preventing overactive immune responses.
