Target Information

Chicken beta-synuclein (SNCB) is a protein that is part of the synuclein family, which includes alpha-synuclein (αS) and gamma-synuclein (γS). These proteins are expressed early in the development of neurons in the substantia nigra, suggesting a role in neuronal development and maturation. Beta-synuclein has been shown to inhibit the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, which is closely associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) and is a major component of Lewy bodies, the pathological hallmarks of PD. In chickens, SNCB may play a role in regulating synaptic function and neuronal viability. It has been implicated in the modulation of intracellular metal levels and the promotion of cellular toxicity and protein aggregation. The protein's ability to bind lipids and induce changes in membrane structure may also have implications for its role in cellular processes.
