Target Information
Porcine glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) is an enzyme that plays a significant role in the one-carbon metabolism pathway in pigs. GNMT is responsible for the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to glycine, thereby catalyzing the formation of sarcosine and S-adenosylhomocystine (SAH). This reaction is crucial for the regulation of methylation processes in the body, as it influences the availability of SAM, a universal methyl donor involved in DNA methylation, protein modification, and numerous other biological methylation reactions. This enzyme is highly expressed in the liver, where it contributes to the detoxification of excess methionine and the maintenance of methyl group homeostasis. GNMT also plays a role in the regulation of gene expression through its impact on SAM and SAH levels, which can act as signaling molecules.
