Target Information
Porcine NADH dehydrogenase flavoprotein 1 (NDUFV1), also known as Complex I-51kD, is a vital component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain's Complex I. This protein is encoded by the NDUFV1 gene and plays a crucial role in the electron transport chain, facilitating the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone. The function of NDUFV1 is not limited to energy production; it also contributes to maintaining cellular homeostasis and is implicated in the regulation of lipid metabolism in chicken embryos. In pigs, NDUFV1 is particularly important for meat quality and animal health. It has been associated with muscle fiber type, mitochondrial respiratory activity, and metabolic enzyme actions, which are key factors in determining the quality of pork. Variations in the NDUFV1 gene can lead to differences in muscle metabolism and meat quality traits. For instance, certain pig breeds with higher percentages of fast-twitch glycolytic fibers, which have lower NDUFV1 activity, may produce meat with altered qualities such as reduced water holding capacity and increased drip loss.
