Target Information
Equine superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a crucial enzyme that plays a significant role in managing cellular oxidative stress by catalyzing the conversion of superoxide radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This enzyme is predominantly located in the cytosol and mitochondria, acting as a primary defense against oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). In horses, SOD1 is associated with resistance to certain neurodegenerative diseases, and species-specific sequence conservation in SOD1 does not necessarily predict pathogenicity across different species, as shown in research comparing dogs and horses. Dysregulation of SOD1 activity has been linked to various complex diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
