Target Information

In rabbits, the S100B gene encodes Protein S100-B, a small protein that binds both zinc and calcium. This protein is highly expressed in astrocytes and is one of the most abundant soluble proteins in the brain. It exhibits a strong affinity for zinc and a weaker affinity for calcium, with distinct binding sites for each ion on its monomers. S100B is used as a marker of glial cell injury in a rabbit model of Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, further suggesting its potential role in central nervous system disease. S100B may be involved in osteoarthritis pathology by regulating inflammatory signaling pathways in animal models.
