Target Information
Interleukin-18 (IL-18), previously known as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) inducing factor (IGIF), is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine. It is produced by a variety of cell types, including both hematopoietic cells and non-hematopoietic cells. While its initial recognition was in Kupffer cells (liver-resident macrophages), IL-18 is constitutively expressed in non-hematopoietic cells such as intestinal epithelial cells, keratinocytes, and endothelial cells. This cytokine plays multiple roles in both innate and acquired immunity. Elevated levels of IL-18 have been observed in the blood of patients with immune-related diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, type I diabetes mellitus, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Interleukin 18 is encoded by the IL18 gene in goats. IL18 is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in host defense against infection and regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses. It is produced by both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, including monocytes, macrophages, keratinocytes and mesenchymal cells.
