Target Information
Equine erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that is essential for the stimulation of red blood cell production in horses. It is primarily produced in the kidneys and plays a critical role in the regulation of erythropoiesis. EPO acts by binding to its receptor on the surface of erythroid progenitor cells, promoting their survival, proliferation, and differentiation into mature red blood cells. This process is vital for maintaining optimal oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood, which is essential for the horse's performance, endurance, and overall health. Additionally, EPO has been found to have neuroprotective and tissue-protective effects, extending its significance beyond the scope of erythropoiesis.
