Target Information
Tissue Inhibitors Of Metalloproteinase 1 is encoded by the TIMP1 gene in horses. It is a member of the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases. It acts as a natural inhibitor of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs are a group of enzymes involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. The resident articular cells, chondrocytes and synovial fibroblasts, are able to produce both TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, while peripheral blood monocytes can only produce the higher molecular weight TIMP-1 in an equine model.
