Target Information
In felines, steroid 21-hydroxylase (CYP21) is a cytochrome P450 enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of adrenal hormones. It converts progesterone to 11-deoxycorticosterone and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone to 11-deoxycortisol, which are key intermediates for aldosterone and cortisol production. These hormones regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and stress responses. Deficiencies in CYP21 can cause congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disorder affecting adrenal hormone synthesis.
