Target Information
Mouse Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (Fgf21) is an endocrine hormone primarily produced in the liver and adipose tissue, playing a significant role in glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis. Fgf21 acts through a receptor complex consisting of beta-Klotho and FGFR1c, FGFR2c, or FGFR3c. In mice, Fgf21 is induced under conditions of fasting and ketogenic diets, promoting lipid utilization and ketogenesis in the liver. It also enhances insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and exerts protective effects against diet-induced obesity and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, Fgf21 has been implicated in the regulation of thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue and the adaptation to cold environments. The metabolic actions of Fgf21 in mice have made it a subject of interest for developing treatments for metabolic disorders.
