Target Information
Swine antibacterial peptide PMAP-36 (PMAP36) is a potent antimicrobial protein found in pigs, known for its ability to combat a wide range of bacterial pathogens. This peptide is part of the innate immune system and plays a critical role in the body's first line of defense against infections. PMAP-36 is characterized by its cationic and amphiphilic α-helical structure, which allows it to disrupt bacterial cell membranes through electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic insertions. It also exhibits immunomodulatory activities, such as inducing the expression of chemokines and neutralizing endotoxins like lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA). The peptide has been studied for its potential applications in veterinary medicine, particularly in the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections in pigs. Research is ongoing to optimize PMAP-36 through sequence design and structural modifications to enhance its stability, specificity, and efficacy against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
