Target Information
Neurofilament light (NF-L) protein is a fundamental component of the neuronal cytoskeleton, particularly abundant in the axons of neurons. It is one of the three neurofilament proteins, alongside medium (NF-M) and heavy (NF-H) chains, that together form the neurofilament network, which is crucial for maintaining axonal structure and facilitating intra-axonal transport. NF-L is a key biomarker for neuronal injury and degeneration, with its levels being monitored in conditions such as ALS, neuropathies, and other disorders characterized by nerve damage. Changes in NF-L expression or aggregation can reflect pathological alterations within the nervous system.
