Target Information
Canine cytochrome C is a multifunctional protein that plays a pivotal role in cellular respiration and apoptosis. It is involved in electron transfer within the respiratory chain and acts as a detoxifying agent to dispose of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the context of cell death, cytochrome C is released from the mitochondria into the cytosol, where it binds to APAF-1, activates pro-caspase 9, and initiates an enzymatic cascade leading to cell death. This protein's interaction with cardiolipin, a phospholipid in the mitochondrial membrane, is essential for initiating apoptosis and transforming cytochrome C's function from an electron-transfer shuttle to a peroxidase-like hemoprotein.
