Target Information
Canine NADPH oxidase like 2 (NXNL2) is a critical enzyme complex involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly in the context of cardiovascular health and immune response. It plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation, where NXNL2-generated oxidative injury contributes to electrical remodeling in the canine atrium. This enzyme is activated in response to various stimuli, leading to the production of superoxide anions, which can modulate cell signaling, growth, and apoptosis. In dogs, NXNL2 has been implicated in the maintenance of electrical remodeling associated with atrial fibrillation, and its inhibition through gene therapy approaches has shown promise in preventing the onset and perpetuation of this arrhythmia. The enzyme's activity is also linked to the activation of protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε), which is involved in the regulation of atrial effective refractory periods.
