Target Information

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a protein kinase distinct from other CDKs due to its ability to operate independently of the cell cycle. Unlike most cyclin-dependent kinases, CDK5 is active during the post-mitotic phase and is predominantly expressed in the brain. It forms a complex with non-cyclin proteins, such as p35 or p25, to exert its effects. This kinase plays a crucial role in neuronal migration, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity. CDK5 is implicated in the regulation of the cytoskeleton and is involved in signal transduction pathways that influence neuronal survival and death. Its activity is tightly regulated, and dysregulation of CDK5 has been associated with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
