Target Information
Canine P-glycoprotein (P-gp), encoded by the ABCB1 gene, is a multidrug efflux pump that limits drug absorption and eliminates toxic compounds in dogs. It plays a crucial role in the transport of a wide range of small molecules and is highly expressed in tissues with barrier functions, such as the blood-brain barrier and the intestinal surface. P-gp is involved in the protection from bacterial products and xenobiotics in the intestine and may affect the bioavailability of drugs used in the treatment of various conditions. Changes in intestinal P-gp expression may be important in the pathogenesis of certain diseases in dogs, and its dysfunction can result from genetic polymorphisms or drug-drug interactions, predisposing affected animals to adverse drug reactions. Understanding P-gp's role in drug disposition is essential for predicting drug bioavailability and adverse reactions in veterinary medicine.
