Target Information

Canine peroxisomal biogenesis factor 5 (PEX5) is a critical peroxin protein that plays a central role in the biogenesis of peroxisomes, organelles involved in the metabolism of lipids and reactive oxygen species (ROS) management. PEX5 functions as a shuttling receptor for proteins containing a type 1 peroxisome targeting signal (PTS1), directing them to the peroxisomal matrix. It is essential for the import of PTS1 proteins into the peroxisomes and is involved in the regulation of pexophagy, the selective degradation of peroxisomes by autophagy. The downregulation of PEX5 has been associated with the modulation of apoptotic pathways, suggesting its importance in cellular survival and death mechanisms.
