Target Information
Porcine apoptosis-inducing factor, mitochondrion-associated (pAIFM), also known as pAIF, is a protein found in pigs that is associated with the mitochondria and plays a critical role in the regulation of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. AIFM is a flavoprotein that, when released from the mitochondria, can induce chromatin condensation and large-scale DNA fragmentation, hallmarks of apoptosis. pAIFM is involved in the intrinsic apoptotic pathway, which is triggered by various cellular stressors, including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and the activation of cell surface death receptors. Under normal conditions, pAIFM resides in the intermembrane space of the mitochondria. However, under apoptotic conditions, it translocates to the nucleus where it can induce cell death.
