Target Information
Porcine 5-aminolevulinate synthase (pALAS), also known as δ-aminolevulinic acid synthase, is a key enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway in pigs. It catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the production of δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which is a precursor to the synthesis of heme, an essential component of hemoglobin and various other proteins involved in electron transport. pALAS is responsible for the condensation of glycine and succinyl-CoA to form ALA, and its activity is tightly regulated to maintain heme levels within the cell. This enzyme is found in various tissues, including the liver and bone marrow, where heme synthesis is particularly active.
