Porcine acid ceramidase 1 (pASAH1), also known as acid ceramidase or ceramidease, is a key enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of ceramide to sphingosine and free fatty acids. This process is a critical step in the regulation of sphingolipid metabolism in pigs. pASAH1 is predominantly found in lysosomes and plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis by controlling the levels of ceramide, a bioactive sphingolipid involved in various cellular processes. Ceramide is known to be a key player in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis, and its levels are tightly controlled by enzymes such as pASAH1.
