Target Information
Porcine acrosin is a serine protease enzyme found in the acrosome of pig sperm, playing a crucial role in the fertilization process. It is involved in the digestion of the zona pellucida, the protective layer surrounding the egg, allowing the sperm to penetrate and fertilize the egg. Acrosin is synthesized as a precursor called proacrosin, which is activated during the acrosome reaction, a process that occurs when the sperm comes into contact with the egg. This enzyme is inhibited by specific inhibitors present in seminal plasma and within the acrosome, ensuring its activation only when necessary for fertilization.
