Target Information

Porcine arginase 1 (pArg1) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the urea cycle, a metabolic pathway responsible for the detoxification of ammonia in pigs. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of the amino acid L-arginine into L-ornithine and urea, which is then excreted from the body. pArg1 is predominantly found in the liver but is also expressed in other tissues, including the kidney and immune cells. This enzyme is not only involved in ammonia detoxification but also in the regulation of the L-arginine-nitric oxide (NO) pathway. By metabolizing L-arginine, pArg1 competes with nitric oxide synthase for the same substrate, thus influencing the production of NO, a molecule with key roles in vasodilation, neurotransmission, and immune response.
