Target Information

Porcine calpain 3 (pCAPN3), also known as muscle-specific calpain, is a member of the calpain family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. This enzyme plays a critical role in the regulation of muscle protein turnover, differentiation, and maintenance of muscle structure and function. pCAPN3 is particularly abundant in skeletal muscle, where it contributes to the proteolytic processing of key proteins involved in muscle contraction and signaling. The activity of pCAPN3 is finely tuned by calcium ions, which bind to the enzyme and trigger its activation. This regulation is essential for the rapid response of muscle to changes in physiological conditions, such as muscle contraction and injury. Due to its muscle-specific expression, pCAPN3 is also a potential biomarker for muscle health and disease in pigs.
