Target Information
Porcine aspartate aminotransferase 2 (AST2) is a crucial enzyme involved in the transamination reaction between glutamate and aspartate, playing a significant role in amino acid metabolism. This mitochondrial isoform, along with the cytosolic AST1, contributes to the metabolic interconversion of these amino acids across various tissues in pigs. AST2 is particularly important in processes such as the urea cycle, gluconeogenesis, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters and nucleotides. In pigs, AST2's role extends beyond routine metabolic functions, as it has been implicated in conditions like hepatic lipid metabolism disorders under heat stress, suggesting its potential involvement in stress response and homeostasis maintenance. Moreover, AST2 has been associated with cardiac health, as indicated by its presence in the malate-aspartate shuttle in myocardium and its involvement in energy production during heart muscle activity.
