Target Information
Porcine autoimmune regulator (pAIRE) is a transcription factor that plays a pivotal role in the immune system of pigs, particularly in the development and function of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Tregs are crucial for maintaining immune tolerance and preventing autoimmune diseases by suppressing the activation of self-reactive immune cells. pAIRE is involved in the transcriptional regulation of genes that are essential for the differentiation and maintenance of Tregs. It is highly conserved across species, highlighting its importance in immune homeostasis. Dysfunction or mutations in AIRE can lead to the breakdown of immune tolerance and result in autoimmune polyendocrinopathy, a condition characterized by multiple organ-specific autoimmune diseases.
