Target Information

Porcine beclin-1 (pBeclin-1) is a homologue of the human beclin-1 protein and is involved in the initiation of autophagy in porcine cells. As a key component of the autophagy machinery, pBeclin-1 forms a complex with other proteins, such as VPS34, to promote the formation of autophagosomes, which are double-membrane vesicles that engulf cellular material targeted for degradation. Autophagy is an essential process for maintaining cellular homeostasis, and beclin-1 plays a critical role in this pathway. Dysregulation of autophagy has been implicated in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. In pigs, the study of pBeclin-1 can provide insights into the mechanisms of autophagy in a large animal model, which may have implications for human health and disease.
