Target Information

Porcine glutamine synthetase (GLUL) is an essential enzyme in pigs that plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in the body. GLUL catalyzes the ATP-dependent condensation of glutamate and ammonia to form glutamine, a process that is vital for maintaining nitrogen balance and providing a key source of energy and nitrogen for various cellular functions. This enzyme is highly expressed in tissues with high metabolic activity, such as the liver, brain, and intestinal mucosa. In the liver, GLUL contributes to detoxification processes by removing ammonia, which is a neurotoxin when accumulated. In the brain, glutamine is a precursor for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, such as glutamate and GABA, making GLUL essential for neuronal function.
