Target Information
Porcine internexin neuronal intermediate filament protein alpha (α-Internexin) is a neuron-specific intermediate filament (IF) protein that is expressed in most neurons at the beginning of differentiation and is considered a marker for neuronal IF inclusion disease. It is a type IV IF protein, similar to the neurofilament triplet proteins (NFTPs), and is often co-expressed with them, suggesting its role as a potential fourth subunit of neurofilaments in the central nervous system. α-Internexin can self-polymerize both in vitro and in transfected cells, and it is present in the absence of NFTPs during development and in specific cell types like granule cells in the cerebellum.
