Target Information

Porcine UNC-13 homolog D, also known as UNC13D, is a crucial component of the immune response, particularly in the function of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells. This protein facilitates the fusion of cytotoxic granules with the plasma membrane, enabling the release of proteins like perforin and granzymes, which are essential for promoting cell death in targeted cells. Mutations in the UNC13D gene have been linked to familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL), a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperinflammation and multi-organ failure. The protein's role in immune cell function makes it a significant player in the pathogenesis of FHL, where mutations can lead to defective cytotoxic granule exocytosis, contributing to the dysregulated immune responses observed in the disease.
