Target Information
Protein-lysine 6-oxidase is encoded by the LOX gene in pigs. It catalyzes the conversion of lysine residues into its aldehyde derivative called allysine. Allysine plays a crucial role in the cross-linking of extracellular matrix proteins, such as collagen and elastin. These cross-links contribute to the structural integrity and stability of connective tissues. Inhibition of lysyl oxidase can lead to conditions like osteolathyrism. LOX is responsible for oxidatively deaminating side-chain lysine and hydroxylysine primary amine substrates, producing reactive aldehydes.
