Target Information

Borrelia burgdorferi OspC, or outer surface protein C, is a significant lipoprotein that plays a crucial role in the bacterium's adaptation to its mammalian host. OspC is expressed once Borrelia burgdorferi has been transmitted from the tick vector to the host and is involved in the bacterium's ability to disseminate within the host tissues. This protein is highly variable, with multiple alleles existing among different strains of the bacterium, which may contribute to immune evasion by the pathogen. The variability of OspC allows the bacterium to potentially avoid detection by the host's immune system, as the immune response to one variant may not be effective against another.
