Target Information
Bovine alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a serum glycoprotein with structural and physico-chemical properties similar to albumin, and it is encoded by the AFP gene in cattle. It is known to bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin, although with less affinity than serum albumin. AFP plays various roles, including acting as a marker for pathological conditions, an antioxidant, a growth regulator in different cells and in cancer, a modulator of immune responses, and a carrier for fatty acids and estrogens. It is synthesized in the liver and the developing gastrointestinal tract, with its production beginning in the yolk sac during embryonic hematopoiesis.
