Target Information

Interleukin 5 (IL-5), also known as eosinophil differentiation factor (EDF) is an interleukin produced by type-2 T helper cells and mast cells. IL-5 expression seems to be very low in normal swine, but after induction of allergic late-phase reactions in sensitized animals, IL-5 expression in peripheral blood lymphocytes after polyclonal stimulation was detected. Through binding to the interleukin-5 receptor, interleukin 5 stimulates B cell growth and increases immunoglobulin secretion-primarily IgA. IL-5 is also a key mediator in eosinophil activation. IL-5 is a cytokine that promotes eosinophil differentiation, proliferation, and survival and is important for the recruitment of eosinophils to the air-ways.
