Target Information
ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCA1, also referred to as the cholesterol efflux regulatory protein (CERP), is encoded by the ABCA1 gene in rabbits. The membrane-associated protein produced by this gene belongs to the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Intervention of ABCA1 expression by gene knockdown or drugs can significantly affect the progression of atherosclerosis. Overexpression of ABCA1 in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis was shown to enhance reverse cholesterol transport and thereby reduce atherosclerotic plaque formation. ABCA1 also plays an important role in the nervous system of rabbits.
