Target Information
Bovine interferon-inducible double stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase activator A, also known as PKR, is a key enzyme in the innate immune response of cattle. This protein is activated by the presence of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), a hallmark of many viral infections. Once activated, PKR phosphorylates the eukaryotic initiation factor 2α (eIF2α), leading to the inhibition of protein synthesis and a shutdown of cellular machinery, which limits viral replication. PKR also plays a role in apoptosis and the regulation of inflammatory responses. In veterinary medicine, understanding and harnessing the activity of PKR is important for developing strategies to combat viral diseases in cattle.
