It is involved in the regulation of immune cell activity, the acute-phase response, and hematopoiesis. IL-6 is produced by various cell types in response to immune stimuli and is particularly important in the early stages of sheep oocyte maturation and embryonic development
. The cytokine is also associated with the pathogenesis of various inflammatory diseases and has been implicated in the response to viral infections, such as COVID-19.
