Target Information
Swine protegrin-3 (NPG3) is a member of the cathelicidin family of antimicrobial peptides. It is synthesized as a prepropeptide in neutrophils and other granulocytes, and is cleaved to produce the mature peptide with antimicrobial activity. NPG3 plays a crucial role in the innate immune system of pigs by targeting a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and some enveloped viruses. It contributes to the host's defense mechanism by disrupting the integrity of microbial membranes, leading to cell lysis and death of the pathogens. The expression of protegrins, including NPG3, can be induced in response to infection, highlighting their importance in immune response and host defense.
