Campylobacter species are commonly found in a variety of warm-blooded animals, including food-producing animals like poultry, cattle, pigs, sheep, and ostriches, as well as in pets such as cats and dogs. These bacteria have also been detected in shellfish. Campylobacter spp. are known to cause gastrointestinal diseases in both humans and several animal species. Among the species, Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni are most extensively studied. Campylobacter lari, a species resistant to nalidixic acid, is thermophilic and microaerophilic. It was first isolated from human feces and is one of the primary Campylobacter species present in birds.
