Target Information

S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) is a member of the S100 protein family. It may play roles in various physiological processes, including the extension of neurites, the proliferation of melanoma cells, the stimulation of calcium ion fluxes, the inhibition of PKC-mediated phosphorylation, astrocytosis and axonal proliferation, and the inhibition of microtubule assembly. The function of S100B in the dog is mainly characterized by its role in the proliferation and differentiation of neurons and glial cells, as well as in the pathological regulation of brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. S100B may be clinically important in assessing neurologic injury and recovery in dogs.
